Flowers: Roses Photographed By Francesco Mastalia

$ 125.00 - $ 500.00

Francesco Mastalia's Roses are sullen beauties, immortalized in sepia warmth. This black and white photograph was taken using an antique lens and process which combine to evoke the past. Mastalia's images are classics and will enhance any art collection and decor.

The Process: The portraits of the Flower collection were photographed using the wet plate collodion process, a technique developed in the mid-19th century, when the art of photography was in its infancy. Working with a large format wooden camera, an 1870’s brass lens, and portable darkroom, glass plates are hand-coated with a blend of collodion and light sensitive salts to produce one of a kind images. Each step of the process has a life of its own. There are no light meters to guide in exposure. Temperature and humidity play a role, and the UV light sensitivity renders different then what the naked eye can see. With so many factors inherent to its unique characteristics, no two plates are ever alike.
